Wednesday, November 4, 1998 Published at 01:20 GMT World: Americas Death threats forces prosecutor from Guatemala A former prosecutor in Guatemela, who was investigating the 1995 massacre of eleven Indian peasants, has left the country, saying he'd received death threats. Ramon Contreras had brought charges against more than twenty soldiers, who are currently in prison accused of involvement in the killings. Last month Mr Contreras resigned, citing a lack of official support. The Guatemalan authorities denied this saying he had sufficient staff and equipment. The case has been followed closely by human rights groups as a test of Guatemala's judicial system. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
