Koreas trade blame for naval clash
North Korean vessel in confrontation with a South Korean ship in 1999
The United States has sided with South Korea after a naval clash with North Korea that put both sides on heightened alert.

Washington has condemned what it calls North Korea's armed provocation against South Korea after a naval clash that killed four South Korean sailors and injured 19 others. The incident is the worst of its kind for three years and came just before South Korea's football team was beaten by Turkey after an unprecedented run of success in the World Cup which South Korea is hosting. Kim Sang-woo, South Korea's Ambassador for International Security says that envy of that success could lie behind the attack.
