Mbeki in DR Congo peace effort
The South African President, Thabo Mbeki, is due to visit the Democratic Republic of Congo later today for talks aimed at reviving the peace process there. President Mbeki is expected to hold discussions with his Congolese counterpart, Joseph Kabila, on the one-day visit to Kinshassa. Peace talks in South Africa earlier this year led to a power-sharing agreement between President Kabila and the Ugandan-backed rebel Congolese Liberation Movement. The other main rebel group, the Rally for Congolese Democracy, which is supported by Rwanda and controls roughly a third of the country, was excluded from the accord.
