Two multinational food companies, Dole and Chiquita, say their banana plantations in Honduras have been devastated by the floods and they expect to suffer losses of around fifty million dollars.
The two giant companies control a large percentage of agricultural land in Honduras, which is a major exporter of bananas.
A spokesman for Chiquita said he expected little or no production from the region for the rest of the year and into 1999.
