A woman has been raped near the city walls in Londonderry.

The police said she was approached by a man in a hot food outlet in Shipquay Street between 0230 and 0300 BST on Friday.

It was then the attacker forced the woman down onto the ground, restrained her and raped her

Detectives want to hear from anyone who can help to identify the man who is described as being in his early 20s, 5ft 5ins tall with dark shaved hair.

The man was wearing a denim jacket and denim jeans and police have appealed to anyone who was in the area at the time of the attack to contact them.

Acting Detective Sergeant Sorin Stewart of the PSNI care unit described what happened.

"The woman met her attacker at a hot food outlet in Shipquay Street," he said.

"She walked along with him to an area near Lower Magazine Street.

"It was then the attacker forced the woman down onto the ground, restrained her and raped her.

"At that particular time there were a lot of pubs and clubs which people were coming out of, and we would be confident there would have been a lot of people around."
