Forum: Is the Dangerous Dogs Act working?
Anne Robinson, aunt of dog attack victim Leah Preston, MP Ken Purchase, and the Kennel Club's Liasion Officer for Staffordshire Bull Terriers, David Levy, answered your questions about the issues raised in 4x4 Reports: Deadly dogs.
There are calls for pet owners to be licensed following a spate of attacks on children by dangerous dogs. Should checks be made on the suitbability of dog owners to keep the larger breeds of robust animals? Who is importing these animals to the UK, where from and why? Are breeders of dangerous dogs taking enough care over the people they are selling the animals to? Should dog owners be forced to take out insurance against attacks? Are the restrictions strict enough for the owners of these animals? Is it right to destroy dogs which attack human beings? Would breed-specific legislation prevent some of these incidents? Will cross-breeding lead to laws that outlaw the breeding of any kind of fighting dog? Are we blacklisting certain breeds of dog instead of irresponsible owners? Should the government be consulting more closely with animal wefare groups and dog associations to assess what action should be taken?
