John Cummings

Date of birth

6 July 1943

Political profile

John Cummings entered the Commons in 1987 as member for Easington, one of the safest Labour seats in the country, after long service as the local council leader.

He also spent his entire working life prior to his election at the local colliery, and was sponsored by the NUM.

He remains a doughty defender of miners' interests, and fights at every opportunity for compensation packages for those affected by ill health.

He is also a keen advocate of measures to hasten the economic regeneration for the former mining communities.

With his strong local roots, he is primarily active on behalf on constituency matters, but is also an opponent of abortion.

He is a powerful speaker who had a brief stint as an Opposition Whip in the mid-1990s.
