Tony Worthington

Date of birth

11 October 1941

Political profile

Tony Worthington was first elected to the Commons in 1987, and enjoyed early success in his political career, joining the front bench soon after his election.

He remained as a Labour spokesman until the 1997 election, when he joined the government as a junior Northern Ireland minister with responsibility for health.

However he was dropped from the government in 1998 and has remained on the backbenches since.

A former academic, he gives the impression of being suited to the backbenches, where he can pursue his own interests in human rights and international development, rather than the political scrapping called for in office.

He sits on the international development select committee, and is particularly interested in African affairs.

He has also fought a long campaign seeking compensation for the victims of asbestosis.
