Graf begins new comeback

Steffi Graf - plagued by various injuries in recent years

Steffi Graf has begun her latest comeback from injury with victory in her opening match at the $450,000 women's event in Leipzig.

The German beat Ruxandra Dragomir 6-3 6-3 in her first competitive singles since undergoing surgery on her right hand.

She stepped onto the court as an unseeded player for the first time in nearly 13 years, but proved she was fully recovered by hammering several trademark forehands past her Roamnian opponent.

Graf, 29, broke serve early in each set to the delight of more than 1,000 cheering spectators at a tournament she helped found in 1990 and has won on four occasions..

"I'm not expecting to march into the final here. I just want some match practice," Graf said afterwards.

She was world number one for a record 374 weeks until March last year, but now occupies 22nd place in the women's list.
