America calls for UN investigation into Liberia shooting

An American envoy who's visiting Liberia has called for a United Nations investigation into a shooting incident at the American embassy in September.

The envoy, the deputy assistant Secretary of State for African Affiars, Vicki Huddleston, said Liberia should ask the UN for help, in the interests of credibility.

An official Liberian report released yesterday Tuesday denied claims by the United States that government forces fired into the grounds of the American embassy during gunbattles with supporters of a former warlord Roosevelt Johnson.

At least fifty people died during two days of shooting.
