Tuesday, November 3, 1998 Published at 21:37 GMT World: Middle East Israeli land-grab Lebanon has asked the United Nations and the European Union to stop what it says is Israel's theft of its soil. Lebanon has accused Israel of scooping hundreds of tonnes of fertile top-soil from the zone it occupies in southern Lebanon. The Lebanese authorities say the soil is being used for farming in northern Israel. According to the Lebanese the once green al-Marj basin has been reduced to a tract of mud, criss-crossed by bulldozer tracks. The reports have incensed Lebanese politicians; there's been no comment from Israel. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
