The British Chancellor of the Exchequer, the finance minister Gordon Brown, has sharply reduced his forecast for the growth of the British economy next year.

In a key economic statement in the House of Commons, he blamed the international economic slowdown that began with the Asian crisis.

But Mr Brown said that despite the slowdown the government would be able to keep within its spending limits.
