Police said Mr Blue was a single man who was a popular individual and he had the reputation among his business and professional associates of being an entrepreneur and generous to his employees.

He was well-known in the Byres Road and west end areas of Glasgow where he frequented cafe bars for business meetings.

Detectives have been trying to piece together the movements of Mr Blue prior to his death and have been conducting house to house enquiries in the Dowanhill area.

The officer in charge of the inquiry, Detective Chief Inspector David Swindle, said: "Alexander Blue appears to have been a well known and popular individual and there are no indications at this stage of our enquiries why he was murdered."
