G8 summit
African child
The leaders of the world's seven richest nations and Russia wrapped up their annual meeting.

'There is nothing that is human that can be regarded as perfect.' That was the tell-tale reaction of the Nigerian President to the deal struck in Canada between the leaders of the world's richest countries and some of the world's poorest. As Mr Obasanjo's words suggest, the help promised by the G8 to Africa does not go as far as anyone wanted.

We talked to one of Thabo Mbeki's leading ministers and to the European trade commissioner.

Lambeth drugs trial
And closer to home, Ben Geoghegan reported from Lambeth on the results of an experiment to limit the numbers of drug related offences. Has the Met Police's decision to effectively turn a blind-eye to cannabis possession in order to free up police time for more serious crimes been a success, and should it be rolled out nationwide?

The director of the US drugs enforcement agency, Asa Hutchinson, doesn't think it will work and told us why.

Middle East
And following President Bush's move to displace Yasser Arafat as the Palestinian leader, we talked to the Israeli foreign Minister Shimon Peres.

The Queen
The Queen spent £330,000 on food last year, the equivalent of 103,448 Big Macs - that and more fascinating facts were revealed.
