Stephen Pound
Date of birth 3 July 1948 Political profile Stephen Pound was first elected to the Commons in 1997, after a high profile career in local government. He retained his seat with an increased majority in 2001 after making a big impact as a backbencher despite little or no chance of joining the frontbench. A self-mocking bruiser who takes pride in being rough around the edges, he caused a stir in the 2001 campaign when in a case of mistaken identity he accused a voter of being a "middle-class whinger". His serious concerns include homelessness, a subject on which he worked before his election, and Europe, for which he is an enthusiast. He is also one of the most committed Parliamentary supporters of the scouting movement. Contact Commons office: 0207 219 6238 pounds@parliament.uk |
