Gerry Steinberg

Date of birth

20 April 1945

Political profile

Gerry Steinberg is active on issues affecting his constituency, where he served as a councillor for many years.

He is also a hard working member of the Public Accounts select committee, where he takes delight in being debunking overly grandiose witnesses.

A former head teacher, he is a watchdog for the rights of teachers, and an opponent of educational selection.

Since his first election in 1987, he has been generally loyal to the party but has developed a more critical stance since the 2001 election.

He used an appearance at Prime Minister's Questions to attack the use of private finance in the health service, and has also criticised American proposals for National Missile Defence.
