Russell Brown

Date of birth

17 September 1951

Political profile

Russell Brown became the first Labour MP for Dumfries in 1997, and held the seat fairly comfortably in 2001.

Prior to his election he had put in long service on local councils, and on the local police and tourist authorities.

He worked for many years in the local chemical industry.

As befits a member with such strong roots in his constituency, he has worked mainly on local issues in the Commons - though these have included significant interventions on Lockerbie and on foot-and-mouth.

On the latter issue, he was one of the first Labour MPs to call for a delay to the 2001 general election.

He is generally a Labour loyalist, and has a particular interest in social exclusion issues. He serves as PPS to Lord Williams.
