Ross Cranston

Date of birth

23 July 1948

Political profile

Australian-born Ross Cranston briefly looked set for a high-flying career, taking on the ministerial post of Solicitor General within a few years of his first election to the Commons in 1997.

He was one of three ministers to refuse the use of an official car.

However, his supposed lack of impact in the legal world and in Parliament worked against him and he was dropped from the government in the reshuffle following the 2001 election.

He was an obvious choice for the role of Solicitor General, having formidable experience in both academic and practical law, as a Professor of Law at the LSE, turned practising barrister.

He remains focused on legal issues, and has called for the government to expedite the introduction of a promised new offence of corporate killing.
