Tuesday, November 3, 1998 Published at 15:02 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Indonesian army instigated May riots: official An official fact-finding team in Indonesia has uncovered evidence that army units instigated riots in May to justify declaring emergency powers. In a report published after several delays, the team said the son-in-law of former President Suharto, Major-General Prabowo Subianto, should be court-martialled for his role. The chairman of the inquiry Marzuki Darusman said what the army had attempted was very close to a coup d'etat, although he wouldn't say whether it would have been for or against President Suharto. The investigation also found that at least fifty-two ethnic Chinese women had been raped during the riots, something which several senior officials had denied.
