Rosie Winterton

Date of birth

10 August 1958

Political profile

Rosie Winterton entered Parliament in 1997, representing the plum Labour seat of Doncaster Central, and immediately became one of the most visible members of the Commons.

She was an extremely assiduous attender of debates and questions, with an emphasis of opposing social exclusion and promoting "quality of life" issues in her constituency.

Her easy assimilation into the life of the Commons came as no surprise, since she was no stranger to the place having been head of John Prescott's private office in opposition; she also helped to run his 1994 bids for the party leadership.

Prior to that, she had never been far from politics in her career as a parliamentary officer and lobbyist. In 2001 she entered the government as a junior minister in the Lord Chancellor's Department.

Ms Winterton became a health minister in the June 2003 reshuffle.
