Mark Todd

Date of birth

29 December 1954

Political profile

Mark Todd was elected to the Commons in 1997, ending Edwina Currie's parliamentary career.

He is an intelligent and articulate backbencher on the mainstream left of the party, whose own grandfather was a Conservative MP; he is also one of the busiest MPs in the Commons, with a constant stream of written and oral questions.

A former publisher and leader of Cambridge City Council, he is a cheerleader for greater government advocacy of IT.

Since transplanting to Derbyshire, he has also become a formidable expert on rural issues.

He sits on the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs committee, and previously served on its predecessor Agriculture committee.

He takes the scrutiny role of the committee system very seriously, and is one of the most ferocious questioners.

He was one of the leading voices calling for the end of the old ministry of agriculture, fisheries and food.

He is generally loyal, and was one of the MPs to defend the part-privatisation of NATS.
