Di Canio gets hit in the pocket

The incident that cost Di Canio £90,000

Sheffield Wednesday's Paolo Di Canio has lost around £90,000 following his recent push on referee Paul Alcock.

Wednesday have cleverly got round PFA rules which state a player can only be fined a maximum two weeks' wages and have hit Di Canio in the pocket.

The 28-year-old was involved in two separate offences as he was sent-off for his part in a brawl which resulted in him lashing out at Arsenal defender Martin Keown during the 1-0 Hillsborough win on September 26, before his shove on Alcock.

The club have therefore fined Di Canio two weeks' wages for each incident, resulting in £68,000 as he earns £17,000 per week, to add to the £10,000 fine handed out by an FA disciplinary commission.

The remaining £12,000 takes into account solicitors' fees as the Italian initially used a Doncaster law firm before switching to a lawyer employed by his father and son agents Moreno and Matteo Roggi.

With Di Canio on the sidelines for 11 weeks as a result of the suspension imposed by the three-man disciplinary panel - three weeks for the red card and eight for the gross misconduct charge - he also misses out on any win and points bonuses prior to his return on December 26 at home to Leicester.

A Wednesday spokesman refused to confirm the exact figure, but revealed: "We have taken disciplinary action against Paolo which has been accepted by him and his representatives."

Matteo Roggi said: "Claims Paolo has been fined £100,000 are not correct. That's just ridiculous. The figure is a bit smaller than that and it's one we have agreed to."
