Andrew Bennett

Date of birth Political profile

In more than 25 years as an MP, Andrew Bennett's highest-profile has involved education matters - he spent five years as an education spokesman in the 1980s.

He is a hard-working and effective parliamentarian who pursues his favoured subjects tenaciously.

On the left of the party, he has been one of the most persistently rebellious Labour MPs since 1997, voting against the government on issues such as NATS privatisation and the right to trial by jury in 1997 parliament, and against foundation hospitals and tuition fees since 2001.

He is an expert on Commons procedure, and has sought to improve the complex rules and traditions surrounding private members' legislation.

He is currently chair of the Housing, Planning and Local Government sub-committee of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister select committee.

Mr Bennett is not standing at the next general election.
