Political profile

Tim Boswell was a minister under John Major, first at the Department of Education and then at Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, but under William Hague's leadership he did not move beyond fairly junior briefs.

After the 2001 election he was appointed as a work and pensions and disability spokesman. He later joined the shadow education team, but retained the disability portfolio.

In June 2003, he concentrated solely on further and higher education, and thus held responsibility for the Conservative policy to abolish tuition fees.

Under Michael Howard's leadership, he was appointed a shadow minister for home, constitutional and legal Affairs.

He was later moved to the work and pensions team in November 2004.

He is not a staunch opponent of the EU, and in the past has been cautiously receptive to the case for the single currency.

He was previously a senior figure in the Conservative Research Department and a part-time special adviser at the Minster of Agriculture.
