Howard Stoate

Date of birth

14 April 1954

Political profile

Howard Stoate was elected to the Commons in 1997, having been a long-time Labour activist and councillor in Dartford.

A GP, he is also the only medical doctor on the Labour benches.

He has consequently become the leading backbench voice on health matters, and is the motivating force behind a number of health related backbench groups.

He is an advocate of greater public health and fitness awareness (and an experienced marathon runner), and a defender of the NHS against private medicine.

He is a member of Amnesty, Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, and is a tireless advocate of the benefits of Dartford as a centre for industry and tourism.

He serves as a parliamentary private secretary to John Denham.
