Brian Donohoe

Date of birth

10 September 1948

Political profile

Brian Donohoe entered Labour politics via the union movement, working as a full time union official.

He remains close to the leaders of the Transport and General Workers' Union, whose help he threatened to invoke when the Labour leadership considered removing him from the Transport Select Committee to make room for the reinstated Gwyneth Dunwoody.

He has sat on the committee since 1993, and it remains his main political interest.

He is particularly interested in railways, and supports renationalisation of Railtrack.

He is also a plain speaker - he once had a glass of water poured over him by Richard Branson after an assessment of Virgin Trains' performance.

Mr Donohoe is a strong supporter of science and its role in employment in his constituency.

He combines this with a strong interest in horticulture, and is chair of the All Party Gardening Group.
