Political profile

Laura Moffatt entered Parliament in 1997, after a long career in local government including a stint as Mayor of Crawley.

She is one of the handful of MPs with practical experience of the NHS, having spent her professional career as a nurse, and has concentrated heavily on health matters in her political life, along with related subjects such as drug abuse.

She also sat throughout the 1997 Parliament on the defence select committee, and developed a strong knowledge of the subject.

Her occasional diversions from the party line included opposing the privatisation of air traffic control system.

Since the 2001 election, she has been a PPS to Lord Irvine.
