Jim Cunningham

Date of birth

4 February 1941

Political profile

Jim Cunningham entered the Commons in 1992, when he came close to losing the seat which is normally fairly safe for Labour.

This was because of the challenge posed by his predecessor as Labour candidate, the Militant Dave Nellist, who had been expelled from the party.

Mr Cunningham was the high profile leader of Coventry City Council, and had also been a shop steward for many years at Rolls Royce's local engineering plant.

Since his election, he has mainly spoken on issues affecting his constituency, such as airport noise.

He sat for five years on the Home Affairs Select Committee, and has also sat on the Trade and Industry Committee
