Bob Ainsworth

Date of birth

19 June 1952

Political profile

Bob Ainsworth has followed a classic career trajectory for a Labour politician: starting as a manual worker for Jaguar in Coventry, he became an active trade unionist, becoming a senior steward, before being elected to the local council.

After a stint as deputy leader of Coventry Council, he was elected to Parliament in 1992.

He is a pragmatic and non-ideological MP whose loyalty to the Labour Party is total - traits which were recognised in his appointment as first an opposition and then a government whip.

Late in the last Parliament he was made a junior minister at the now disbanded DETR, and after Labour's election win in 2001 he became a minister at the Home Office.

In the June 2003 reshuffle he was appointed deputy chief whip.
