Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

Date of birth

23 March 1953

Political profile

Geoffrey Clifton-Brown fits the profile for a quintessential Tory MP - an Old Etonian with a family background of rural gentry and a history of political representation, including a great-great-uncle who was Speaker in the 1940s.

Unsurprisingly, he is most comfortable with countryside issues, and is a vociferous supporter of fox hunting and gun ownership.

He was PPS to Agriculture Minister Douglas Hogg in the last years of the Major government.

He is also a fiercely partisan Conservative, with a lingering attachment to right wing ideology; he argued in a pamphlet for the privatisation of the state pension.

He became a Conservative whip in 1999, and on that basis refused to reveal whom he supported for the leadership - though he did mischievously declare that he had switched his vote between different rounds.

In June 2002, he became an opposition spokesman on local government.

Since March 2004, he has worked as an Opposition Whip.
