Colin Breed

Date of birth

4 May 1947

Political profile

Colin Breed successfully translated a high profile, if small scale, local government career into parliamentary success at his first attempt in 1997, and held his seat in 2001.

As a former bank manager, he was placed on the Liberal Democrat's trade and industry team where he produced a report on supermarket pricing which helped prompt a Competition Commission inquiry.

He became the party's lead agriculture spokesman, but was demoted to number two team after the 2001 election before becoming a junior defence spokesman.

A methodist lay preacher, he is one of the more socially conservative Liberal Democrat MPs, and voted against equalising the age of consent for homosexuals and heterosexuals.
