Phil Hope

Date of birth

19 April 1955

Political profile

Phil Hope was first elected in 1997, on the back of a strong local presence as a long serving councillor and youth worker.

He was appointed PPS to Nick Raynsford in 1999, and after the 2001 election became PPS to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

In June 2003 he became a junior minister in Mr Prescott's department.

His major political interest, a legacy of his professional career, is in youth policy and he has written many pamphlets on the subject, with a particular emphasis on the eradication of child poverty, and on improved pay and working conditions.

He is also strongly pro-European.
