Betty Williams

Date of birth

31 July 1944

Political profile

Betty Williams was a newcomer to the Commons when she won Conwy in 1997, but in no way a newcomer to the Labour movement or electoral politics.

It was her third attempt at winning Conwy, and she had served as a councillor at various levels since the 1960s.

She eschews much of the government's policy in favour of an Old Labour approach, and is not afraid to mention the word "socialism".

She has voted against the government on many occasions over issues such as the pensions link to earnings and the NATS (air traffic control) privatisation.

The subject to which she returns most often is that of welfare, and she is particularly interested in the rights of the disabled.

She is also an advocate of the Welsh language and culture.
