Kali Mountford

Date of birth

12 January 1954

Political profile

Kali Mountford was elected to the Commons in 1997, after a career spent as a civil servant in the Department of Employment where she was also a union shop steward.

She established herself as an extremely loyal backbencher, but she landed in hot water in 1998, when she leaked a draft copy of a Social Security select committee report to the chancellor's staff.

She then initially denied responsibility for the leak when the Standards and Privileges committee launched an investigation.

She was eventually suspended from the House for five days, and removed from the committee.

She held her seat in 2001 and was elected as a vice-chair of the Yorkshire group of Labour MPs, the first woman to hold the post.

She was also appointed to the Treasury select committee. She remains a very loyal backbench presence, and tends to speak on issues of social exclusion, and especially on employment and social security matters.
