Bob Russell

Date of birth

31 March 1946

Political profile

Bob Russell is a locally focused MP who makes great play of his local roots. He previously stood in Colchester as the Labour candidate in 1979.

He came to the Liberal Democrats via the SDP, serving as a councillor for all three parties and leading Colchester council for four years.

He has made calls for greater regulation of subjects as diverse as football agents and car boot sales, and was one of the few Liberal Democrats to oppose the equalisation of the age of consent.

A former journalist and press officer, he has a talent for attracting publicity, bolstered by his love of sport, on which he acts as a spokesman for his party.

He is also a member of the Home Affairs select committee.
