Jimmy Hood

Date of birth

16 May 1948

Political profile

Jimmy Hood has the track record of a fearsome Old Labour leftwinger; a mining engineer by profession, he was an NUM official in the 1980s and led the Nottinghamshire miners in their strike action.

When he entered the Commons in 1987, he joined the left wing Campaign group, and looked set to become a Bennite troublemaker, opposing the Gulf War and initially refusing to pay poll tax.

He has, however, proved to be a pragmatist and an effective political operator, as well as a loyal New Labour MP.

After the 2001 election, he called for payments for people who voted.

He campaigns on constituency issues as well as being a defender of Scottish interests.

He is interested in international affairs, becoming chair of the European Scrutiny Committee.

He is also a passionate advocate of the rights of Greek Cypriots, and an opponent of the Turkish presence on the island.
