Gareth Thomas
Date of birth 25 September 1954 Political profile Gareth Thomas was an unexpected winner in 1997, defeating Rod Richards to complete the Conservative rout in Wales; he held the seat with a slightly increased vote share in 2001. He is firmly on the modernising wing of the party and is a member of Amnesty and the Fabian Society. He also supports electoral reform for Westminster. A former barrister, he is a member of the Society of Labour Lawyers, and has given vocal support to the government's controversial legal reforms. He is a thoughtful performer in the Commons, and has been largely loyal to the government and a strong supporter of devolution. He has, however, criticised the emphasis on fox hunting - he opposes a ban on libertarian grounds. In 2001, he was appointed a PPS to Welsh Secretary Paul Murphy Contact
