Martyn Jones

Date of birth

1 March 1947

Political profile

An MP since 1987, Martyn Jones served as a Whip for four years and sat briefly on the Labour front bench, but was dropped in 1995.

He was a leftwing supporter of John Prescott's bid for the Labour leadership.

Following Labour's election victory, he became chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, a position he retained after the 2001 election.

He takes a strong interest in agricultural affairs, but this is mainly from a consumer safety point of view; as a microbiologist he applies a scientific background to issues of food safety.

Although he is an opponent of hunting, and a supporter of CND.
