Tuesday, November 3, 1998 Published at 11:33 GMT World: South Asia Security tightened in Dhaka Police in Bangladesh say they are tightening security in the capital, Dhaka, ahead of the verdict on Sunday in the trial of those accused of killing the country's first president, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The chief of police said that special security measures have been taken around key government buildings. Security has also been tightened around diplomatic enclaves and the homes of ministers and judges. The ruling Awami League and the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party have both called demonstrations this week. Sheikh Mujibur was killed in 1975, but a case against the accused was not opened until two years ago, when his daughter, Sheikh Hasina, became prime minister. Nineteen people are accused in the case, but only five have been detained. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
