London market report

Tuesday open

Disappointing first-half profits from Marks & Spencer condemned the London share market to an opening fall, amid a lack of positive signals from elsewhere.

At 0951 GMT, the leading FTSE 100 index was 19 points lower at 5,506.

Analysts said the retailer issued a veiled profits warning and its shares have slumped over 10%.

Positive influences from elsewhere were sparse.

The Dow added 1.3% but didn't improve on its level when London closed yesterday.

Tokyo's market was shut overnight for a public holiday.
