Maeve Sherlock has been director of the National Council for One Parent Families since 1997. The charity runs an information service and campaigns to change the law and improve provisions for lone parent families. No stranger to campaign work, Maeve Sherlock made a name for herself at the National Union of Students, where she worked for five years. She spent two years (1988-1990) as president of the NUS and led a hard-hitting campaign against the introduction of student loans. She also fought students having to pay the poll tax and opposed moves from Conservative students to end compulsory membership of student unions. As NUS president she appeared on Question Time when it was chaired by Robin Day. Maeve Sherlock has a Sociology degree from the University of Liverpool and a Masters from the Open University Business school. She is currently a governor of Sheffield Hallam University.
