England fall short in Perth run-chase

Graham Thorpe - boosted his hopes of a Test place

John Crawley and Graham Thorpe played themselves into form with half centuries but England had to settle for a draw in their four-day game against Western Australia in Perth.

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew reports from the WACA ground (Radio 5 Live)
The tourists were set a victory target of 282 off 63 overs but could not achieve the required run-rate and the game ended with the total on 192 for four.

"It's good to get a game under our belt. The players would be first to acknowledge that they have work to do in all areas but we have time to do it and good facilities to do it in," said coach David Lloyd.

"It would have been absolutely terrific if we could have come away with a resounding victory but you have to acknowledge we have to find our feet."

Western Australia had declared their second innings on 268 for three just before lunch, with Ryan Campbell the last man out after hammering 146 from 147 deliveries.

England sent in Dominic Cork as an emergency opener with Mark Butcher still unable to bat after requiring ten stitches when he was struck above the right eye earlier in the match.

The experiment failed as Cork lasted only two deliveries but Crawley and Nasser Hussain steadied the innings with a second wicket partnership of 86, despite Hussain's nose being bloodied when he was hit by a bouncer from Shane Jurgensen.

Hussain batted on after treatment from team physio Wayne Morton but was eventually out for 28 when he edged a ball from Jurgensen to the wicket-keeper.

England were 120 for two at tea with Crawley on 64 but he added just one more to his total before falling victim to Matthew Nicholson, who took seven wickets in England's first innings.

David Lloyd: "We can do a lot better than that"
The task of scoring 162 in the final session proved too much and Thorpe settled for batting practice to reach an unbeaten 64 before the two skippers decided to call a halt 15 minutes early.

England's approach failed to impress Western Australia captain Justin Langer, who said: "What's the point of playing a game if you don't play a game to win?

"I thought we set them a reasonable total on a very, very good batting wicket with a very fast outfield against a very inexperienced attack.

"I hope England play with the same attitude throughout the summer, because if they do it will be a long summer for them."

England now move on to Adelaide for a game against South Australia and skipper Alec Stewart and Mike Atherton both expect to be fit to play.

All-rounder Ben Hollioake remains 'doubtful' after pulling a groin muscle in the opening game of the tour against an Australian Board Chairman's XI. South Australia have, meanwhile, named 18-year-old off-spinner Andrew Crook in a 14-man squad for the match.
