An outspoken Express columnist, Peter Hitchens is fiercely opposed to the Euro - "an extremist idea" - and thinks homosexuals should get back in the closet. In his own words, he is "almost the only British journalist who did not fall in love with Labour in 1997 and still hasn't". He had verbal scuffles with Neil Kinnock in the 1987 and 1992 elections.
As a student in York, Peter Hitchens wanted to be a full-time Bolshevik and joined the Socialist Worker party. His political views have now moved firmly to the right, though he refuses private medical cover offered to Express staff. He worked on newspapers in Swindon and Coventry, joining The Express as a general reporter in 1977. He later worked as Moscow Correspondent and Washington Correspondent and became Assistant Editor in 1995. He has a famous on-going political feud with journalist brother Christopher.
