David Willets was promoted to the shadow cabinet in June this year. Nicknamed "two-brains", he is known as a clever policy expert and right-wing intellectual. Before becoming MP for Havant in 1992 he worked at the Treasury in Margaret Thatcher's Policy Unit. He was also director of Studies at the Centre for Policy Studies. He spent 6 months as Paymaster-General but was forced to resign during the cash-for-questions affair. He was accused of trying to influence, as a whip, the chairman of a committee investigating Neil Hamilton. He resigned immediately before the report was published. After the Tory election defeat, William Hague brought him back as a junior employment spokesman. He has published several pamphlets and is a keen supporter of a free market. Willetts was educated at Oxford University, is married to Sarah and has two children.
