Political profile

Sir Sydney Chapman is a long serving Conservative, who was first elected for a Birmingham seat in 1970 which he held for just one term.

He returned in 1979 as member for Chipping Barnet, a seat he has held ever since.

He served as PPS to Norman Fowler in the early 80s and then entered the Whips' Office, which he left in 1995.

As an architect and planner by profession, he has a strong interest in conservation and particularly in the preservation of London's greenbelt, and has instituted several treeplanting initiatives.

In January 2003, he announced his intention to stand down at the next election.
