Officer charged after man injured
Mr McMillan was attacked outside the Bob Trollop pub
A senior police officer has been charged after an incident outside a Newcastle pub in which a man was seriously injured.
Detective Constable John Beresford, 43, a serving officer with Durham Constabulary, will appear before Newcastle magistrates on 28 June charged with assault. Graeme McMillan, 43, of Kingston Park, Newcastle, was allegedly knocked unconscious after being punched outside a pub on the city's Quayside. A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said Mr McMillan, who suffered a fractured skull, is in a serious condition at Newcastle General Hospital. Three off-duty Durham officers volunteered to speak to Northumbria detectives about the incident, which happened outside the Bob Trollop pub at 2150 BST on 8 June. A spokesman for the Durham force said: "We can confirm that a serving Durham officer has been charged with assault and is appearing in court."
