Andrew Tyrie
Date of birth 15 January 1957 Political profile Andrew Tyrie was first elected to the Commons in 1997, but already had a strong background in Conservative politics, having served as a special adviser in the 1980s to Chancellors Nigel Lawson and John Major. He is a strongly academic economist and pamphleteer, who shows less outright opposition to the euro than many of his colleagues. He is a particular critic of Labour's constitutional policies, use of special advisers and pursued Tony Blair personally over ministerial links with the Hinduja brothers. He has also written on House of Lords reform, favouring an elected second chamber. He managed Ken Clarke's unsuccessful leadership bid in 2001, and refused a frontbench post after Iain Duncan Smith's election. He sits instead on the Treasury select committee. Contact
