Date of birth 25 March 1945 Political profile Christine Russell was a Chester councillor, librarian and JP, who ousted well-known MP Gyles Brandreth with a large swing to Labour, to become the city's first ever woman Labour MP. She is keen on tackling youth crime, transport and urban regeneration. She chaired the council's development and strategic planning committee, introducing "park and ride" and CCTV to the centre of Chester, and chaired its annual film festival. She was selected from an open shortlist after the all-women shortlist was ruled illegal. In her maiden speech she pleaded for more university places for foreign students. She has asked about TV licence concessions, museums and galleries, use of the internet by business, the film industry, road traffic reduction, the magistracy, and protection of the countryside.
