Campaigning has been drawing to a close in the United States ahead of elections that may have major implications for President Clinton's political future.

At stake are all the seats in the House of Representatives and a-third of those in the Senate.

The BBC Washington correspondent says the campaign has generally been lacklustre, and the sex scandal surrounding President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky has played a subdued role.

But our correspondent says that if the Republican Party does better than expected it might see this as a mandate to impeach Mr Clinton.
