A nurse who stole from mentally disabled patients at a home near York has been struck off.

Malcolm Goodall, 38, stole more than £3,000 from six residents at Creykes Lodge in Rawcliffe.

Goodall was jailed for 18 months last August after pleading guilty to 13 counts of theft and asking for a further 25 offences to be taken into account.

On Tuesday, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) heard Goodall had sole responsibility for patients' bank accounts, because they were unable to manage their affairs.

This particular case is horrific in its extent.

But he raided the accounts and disguised the thefts by making them look like rent payments.

The NMC removed Goodall's name from the nursing register.

Professor Paul Lewis, the NMC's chairman, said: "The breach of trust and taking advantage of vulnerable patients was so serious that his name should be removed from the register with immediate effect."

Stuart Skyte, head of communications for the NMC, said: "We take very seriously cases where nurses abuse vulnerable people, whether they are elderly or mentally ill.

"This particular case is horrific in its extent."
